Gum disease is caused by plaque bacteria that builds up around, on and in between your teeth. If this bacteria is not removed by regular brushing and flossing it can irritate gums, leading to red, swollen and bleeding gums, which are symptoms of gum disease, known as gingivitis
 
If gingivitis is not treated, the disease can further progress to periodontitis which leads to the supporting structures that are holding the teeth (the bone) being resorbed leading to the gums receding and teeth becoming lose. Eventually the teeth are lost
